On the Record

What’s said in the room stays in it. This is everything else.

Filmed conversations with the people whose decisions shape a business and the industry around it, the ones on their way there, and the businesses changing what the work looks like. Person first, role second.

No Straight Line

Podcast & Video Series

The career, not the job title.

Nobody’s route into this ends up where they thought it would. Some run a function. Some are the only lawyer in the building. Some landed somewhere with no legal department at all and made themselves matter anyway.

An hour on how a person actually got there — the turns, the decisions that looked wrong at the time, the year that changed everything and the year that nearly ended it. We ask about the person rather than the position, because the position is the least interesting thing about anybody.

And we ask what they’ve built. Legal spent a long time being described as the department that says no, which never matched what the good ones were actually doing. The seat has moved since: the lawyer is in the boardroom now rather than briefed after it, and more and more often the one shaping what gets decided there. That shift deserves better coverage than it gets, and the people driving it deserve to be asked about it properly.

Mostly, though, this is somebody’s story and why they still care about it. That’s the part in-house lawyers recognise in each other and almost never get to hear said out loud.

For anyone weighing a move in-house, anyone building a path of their own, and anyone who wants to see how their peers got where they got.

And two more, alongside it

Where the profession is heading, and who’s building the tools it runs on.

The Climb

Podcast & Video Series

Five to ten years in, and on the way up.

The lawyers who’ll be running functions next. What they’ve learnt so far, how they built a network before they had a title to do it for them, the advice from above that actually helped, and what they think their industry looks like in ten years — which is worth more than it sounds, given they’ll be the ones standing in it.

What They’re Building

Podcast & Video Series

The people building what the industry runs on.

Time with the person behind a business changing how legal work gets done. What they’ve built, who it’s for, and their read on where the industry is going. The business gets explained properly rather than pitched in ninety seconds.

Being in this series is not a place in a room, and it never buys one. The two things stay separate.

From the rooms

Filmed conversations and written notes.

Evidence the rooms happen, and the reason someone wants to be in the next one. Never sold on its own, and never allowed to shape the room it came from.

Filmed conversation

One in-house lawyer, one hour, one subject

Shot in a side room before or after the session, with the person’s agreement. Never inside the room itself.

From a fixture

The day itself, as it happened

Cameras follow the day rather than the business. Everybody who was there is in it; nobody is interviewed about a product.

Written record

What a working group concluded

Published with participants’ names attached, where they’ve agreed to it. Roundtables stay unattributed.

Partner content

Published under your own name.

Written pieces, filmed conversations and podcasts from the organisations who support the rooms. Made once, with their name on the front, and given to the people in it. Never sold on its own, and never allowed to shape the room it came from.

If you’ve got something worth publishing, talk to us — we’re always glad to put good work in front of this audience.

How Partner Content works

Nothing here is published yet. We’d rather show you an empty shelf than fill it with something borrowed.

One ask, and only one

Ask for an invitation.

Tell us which room interests you and why. There’s no membership fee — every seat is decided, not sold or signed up for, and that’s what keeps the room worth being in. A person reads every one.
